The 40th Anniversary Workshop and Conference of the Society for News Design
March 22–24, 2018

Why partner with the Society for News Design?

How a news story is told and delivered has the power to help audiences understand an increasingly complex world. Today’s media environment bears scant resemblance to that of a generation ago, but there has been one constant: Over four decades, the Society for News Design (SND) has carried out a mission to design, promote and advance excellence in visual journalism across all mediums.

At a time when news is being consumed in many ways, across a multitude of platforms—and breaking on a moment-to-moment basis—SND’s critical role as stewards of the profession is more relevant than ever before.

SND members are the early adopters, the pioneers of new technologies, from the earliest days of the Macintosh and PageMaker to today’s latest developments around virtual reality, D3 and mobile apps. Next year marks a milestone: SND’s 40th annual workshop, creative conference and awards ceremony will take place in New York City next spring (March 22-24, 2018).

SND/NYC offers a unique opportunity for your company or organization to reach the most influential people working at the intersection of design, technology, storytelling and journalism,  during this unparalleled moment for the news profession and society.

Who will attend?

  • We expect more than 800 attendees during three packed days. SND members art direct, design, edit, report, illustrate, make photos and video, visualize data, write code, lead teams and run organizations.

  • Because New York is the unrivaled epicenter of our profession, we expect to host media executives, creative directors, agency leaders, educators, students and more, from around the globe. The Society has thrived internationally for decades, with members and active regional associations operating throughout Europe, South America, the Middle East and Asia.

Venue, program and events

The hub of SND/NYC will be the New School’s impressive University Center building in Greenwich Village near Union Square, which opened in 2014 and was designed by Roger Duffy. The Times’s architecture critic called the building “a celebration of the cosmopolitan city.” And, to take advantage of New York’s incredible range of neighborhoods, we are looking to host receptions, parties and ancillary events throughout the city.

We are beginning to craft sessions and recruit speakers. Some of the issues and questions at the forefront of organizers’ minds:

  • How do we stay inspired, fuel our creativity and build the next generation of leaders? What can traditional media companies learn from startups and vice versa?

  • What is the future of print, both in the U.S. and globally?

  • How should we design for new interfaces like bots, voice, wearables and an expanding world of devices?

  • Can trust, credibility and participation in media be improved through design?

  • What are the latest innovations and best practices of data visualization, multimedia storytelling, alternative storyforms, distributed platforms, collaborative workflows, typography, cartography, illustration, video, content management systems … and every other facet of publishing today?

About SND

The Society for News Design is an international organization for news media professionals and visual communicators who create print, web, mobile publications and products. Since 1978, the Society has worked to define and elevate the best of visual journalism across every medium through its annual creative competitions, workshops and training events. During the past decade, annual workshop locations have spanned the globe, from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. and from Buenos Aires to Frankfurt, Germany. The 2018 Workshop will be the first hosted in New York City since 1982, when it was chaired by the legendary Lou Silverstein.
